Understanding the wheelchair service
Getting a NHS Wheelchair:

Ask a GP, Physiotherapist or Hospital staff to refer you to your local wheelchair service for an assessment. You will need to do this before you can get an NHS wheelchair.

The local wheelchair service will assess and decide if you need a wheelchair and, if so, what type. This service worked with children over 36 months and adults who have a long term medical condition.

You might be able to get a voucher. This allows you to pay towards the cost of a different type of wheelchair.

Personal Wheelchair Budget:

Formerly known as the wheelchair voucher scheme, personal wheelchair budget (PWB) allows you greater flexibility and choice, so that you can personalise your chair and express your individuality.

Wheelchair users will have three options for the provision of their chair through a personal wheelchair budget (PWB):

● Notional PWB (standard NHS provision) This means the provision of the wheelchair that would have routinely been provided by the NHS to meet your identified needs.
● Notional PWB with contribution for upgrade or accessories This option allows a person or another agency (for example social care, access to work or voluntary or charitable organisation) to contribute to your personal budget towards a higher specification NHS wheelchair that is offered within the catalogue of chairs provided, or add additional features in order to meet wider health and wellbeing needs.
● Third party PWB This allows a person to use their personal budget as a contribution to buying a wheelchair from an independent retailer outside of the NHS. This is only available if the wheelchair is deemed clinically appropriate following a discussion with a wheelchair therapist.

● Contact us before your first appointment to get invaluable help and support before your PWB appointment.
● Once you receive stage 1 paperwork from your NHS prescriber book a wheelchair assessment with Invictus Active, we provide at-home and in-house appointments. You will have the opportunity to go through your spec in full while adding any optional extras or accessories.
● Quotation will be given with a full specification of your Wheelchair.
● To proceed with your order a £500 deposit will be required.
● Final payments owed when your chair is ready to ship.

Example of how PWB voucher could work for you buying your Invictus Active Wheelchair:

Quickie Nitrum Wheelchair = £3000
Deposit : – £500
PWB Voucher (example, will vary) = – £900
Balance owed: £1600

What value would I expect from my voucher?

Over the years we have known vouchers for the value of £200 up to £2000.

The voucher value is fully dependent on your personal circumstances, what your prescriber deems suitable for your needs and what postcode area you fall under.
